Therapeutic Infrared Pain Relief

”A safe and highly effective therapeutic treatment.”

Infrared pain relief is a technique that involves utilizing infrared radiation.

Some of this terminology can sound a little scary, but there is no need to worry. Infrared is a safe and medically proven method of healing.

It has nothing to do with ultraviolet radiation (which can damage the skin and give you a sunburn) or atomic radiation (the atomic bomb kind of radiation).

Although we now use technology such as the Light Relief Infrared Pain Device, the concept of infrared pain relief has been used for thousands of years. A traditional Chinese and Indian method of healing is called palm healing. The practice is over 3,000 years old and is an example of infrared healing.

The name infrared means below red, the Latin infra meaning "below". Red is the color of the longest wavelengths of visible light. Infrared light has a longer wavelength (and so a lower frequency) than that of red light visible to humans, hence the literal meaning of below red.

A wavelength is a measure of the distance between repetitions of a shape such as peaks, valleys, or zero-crossings, not a measure of how far any given particle moves.

Infrared heat lamp Infrared Radiation (IR) is the electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength between 0.7 and 300 micrometres. IR is also known as infrared heat, and radiant heat.

Through a process called conversion, the energy directly and efficiently heats an object, such as the human body without having to heat the air between.

The sun is our primary source of radiant energy. Think how warm an asphalt driveway or shingled roof gets after being in the sun all day. Some people claim they could fry an egg on these surfaces!

Infrared rays are categorized based on their wavelength. Various sectors have sub-divided the categories based on their unique needs. For example, the telecommunication band is different from the astronomy band. For our purposes, we will use the ISO categories as follows:

Near infrared (NIR) has a wavelength of 0.78 to 3 µm (micrometers)Mid infrared (MIR) has a wavelength of 3 to 50 µmFar Infrared (FIR) has a wavelength of 50 to 1000 µm

Far infrared rays (FIR) are the safest and most beneficial to humans. They have the ability to penetrate deep into the body and elevate the surface temperature of the body. The increased heat improves circulation, expands capillaries, relieves or reduces pain and can help cells rejuvenate.

There is some indication that the warming effect may also help promote elimination of poisonous heavy metals and toxic food substances from food through the surface of the skin.

The heat is a gentle heat that is controlled not to exceed the temperature of the human body. It is similar to using a warm compress, hot water bottle or electric heating pad. There are no known damaging side effects and many benefits reported.

Heat produces the following therapeutic effects:

  • increases the extensibility of collagen tissues

  • decreases joint stiffness

  • relieves muscle spasms

  • provides relief from pain

  • increases blood flow

  • reduces inflammation

Some conditions that respond favorably to FIR are chronic pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, muscle pain, arthritis, gout, knee injuries and rheumatism. In fact, infrared healing is quickly becoming the most sought after technology to promote relief in chronic ailments and to accelerate healing in acute soft tissue injury.

If you decide to try infrared pain relief technology, you have a few choices. You can go to a clinic that may have sophisticated equipment and experienced staff. Be sure you understand the time and monetary commitment for your treatments.

Or you can purchase a product for use at home such as the one shown here that is available online. Infrared radiation is safe when used as directed. Be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions carefully.

Either way, it is recommended that you first speak with your doctor and be sure they are aware of all alternative treatments that you are considering.
