Chronic Pain Syndrome:
What It Is And What Can Be Done

”The key first step is to get help for the condition.”

Chronic pain syndrome is an occurrence of acute pain that like chronic inflammation, does not go away. Chronic pain remains long term.

In order to better describe this condition, consider what happens when you burn your finger. The nerve endings near the fingertip send a message to the brain of pain. You instantly remove your finger from the heat because your brain sends that message to your finger.

However, if you have chronic pain syndrome, the pain signals being sent to the brain keep firing within your body for weeks, months and sometimes even longer.

In most situations, some type of initial physical trauma leads to the initial signaling for the pain. This may be a burn, a serious infection or sprain. Sometimes the pain is caused by conditions associated with chronic inflammation.

When you have chronic pain however, the pain continues even beyond the illness. Further, there does not need to be an initial traumatic event to start the chronic pain occurring. In any of these cases, the constant firing of the pain signal leaves an individual experiencing painful movements and aches for a long time.

Chronic Pain Syndrome

There are many types of chronic pain including:

  • Chronic headaches

  • Chronic back pain, most often lower back pain

  • Arthritis pain

  • Pain attributed to cancer

  • Pain from the damage of neurogenic systems, in this situation there is damage to the nerves or the central nervous system

  • Pain attributed to a disease or injury that is no longer causing damage, called psychogenic pain

  • Liver pain

  • Sciatic nerve pain

  • Groin pain

  • Lower abdominal pain

These are just some examples of the pain that you could be feeling that could be considered chronic if it lasts.

Getting Help

People who have chronic pain syndrome often need to seek medical attention for the underlying problem or initial problem. Then, there is the need for pain management. For example, gout pain relief will need to start with the treatment of gout and then may need to focus on treatment for the pain symptoms. The key first step is to get help for the condition.

Chronic Pain Can Be Treated

Most people can find some treatment for chronic pain. Both conventional medicine and alternative treatments including natural remedies offer treatment options for this syndrome. More and more emphasis is being put on what we eat as the cause or solution to our medical problems. Because chronic inflammation is so widespread and so many conditions are attributed to inflammation, many people are finding relief by taking anti-inflammatory supplements and by following an anti inflammation diet.
