Cancer Pain
Management Options

”The type of treatment will depend on
the type of pain that is being experienced.”

Cancer pain management can be tricky for many people for many different reasons. The type of cancer that one is dealing with is very important in regards to the type of pain management that one will be able to use.

Another major factor to consider is the type of cancer treatment that is being used to fight the cancer.

This can play a huge role in how the pain is dealt with, as there are some things that will interact in a bad way with different cancers, or will have no effect at all based on what treatment is occurring.

Here are some of the techniques that are used to treat cancer pain and for what type of pain they are used:

  • Over the counter pain relievers. These are used in order to treat moderate pain. However, these can only be used after checking with your doctor especially if chemotherapy is occurring.

  • Onset narcotic pain relievers are to be used to treat flare ups or sudden intense pain. An example of this would be oral codeine. This is only available through prescription.

  • In order to treat tingling and burning pain from cancer, doctors may prescribe antidepressants or anticonvulsants.
