Advanced Pain Management:

”What are the options?”

Advanced pain management is what some refer to when attempting to make someone's last moments as pain free as possible. This is usually what occurs as someone is nearing the end of life, and is in extreme pain.

It is now that a doctor will do all that is possible in order their patient feel as comfortable as possible.

The problem with this type of pain management is that there is not a lot of research or data that can be collected as there is not a real way to measure how much the symptoms improve or what is actually occurring if the patient does feel better.

This is because in many instances the individuals have stopped communicating. For this reason they cannot provide a lot of hard evidence or accurate details as to the relief that they feel as a result of the treatments that they are receiving.

Getting The Medicine

There are different methods to administer the chronic pain management to the patient in order for them to feel as comfortable as possible for the remainder of their life. In many cases , the methods and application of pain medication will change during this time.

Here are some of the pain medication applications that are used in treating advanced pain:

Oral applications will usually occur in the beginning for most patients. Usually the medication will help in relieving some of the intense pain and different types of medication will be used to help to deal with the different types of pain being felt.
As the pain progresses and the symptoms become more intense, injecting of the pain medication may occur. This will provide a more rapid relief as well as allow for the patient to not have to deal with pills if they are having trouble swallowing.
The final option is usually intravenous application of the pain medication through either a catheter or a traditional IV.

Various Options

There are different types of advanced pain and there are different levels and methods in which to treat it. Medications are usually prescribed for long term and short term pain relief.

At this stage in life it comes down to compassion and managing the pain as effectively as possible. Talk with the medical staff and have your questions answered and your concerns addressed.

Doctors and their support staff have become experts in advanced pain management by recognizing and treating the symptoms accordingly.
